Deadwood Review

Updated: Aug 9, 2019

Set in the 19th century during the post-Civil War years, deep in South Dakota, Deadwood is considered the best drama series HBO has ever made. Blending historical facts and fiction to create a world of its own. The streets are swamped with mud and feces. However, there are rumors of gold. The town is young and lawless, and has a complete disregard for societal rules. This attracts not only miners who are looking to get rich quick, but criminals wanting to capitalize off the lack of organization. With so many different personalities in the town it gives a lot of room for character development and humorous interactions.

Some dialogue goes over the viewer’s head. Some I wish went over my head. The language is old English mixed with western slang and a whole lot of swearing. Dropping cusses in every second sentence and calling each other “cock suckers,” the show is definitely for mature audiences only. The show does, however, have a quick back and forth between characters which makes it quite interesting to watch.

The acting is celebrated among viewers. Deadwood has a huge cast but it seems like each actor was hand made perfectly for the role. The characters are round and being developed throughout the series. In the beginning Al is so evil he is willing to kill a child, however, as the season carries on the viewer sees different sides of him and development within him which forces the viewer to change their mind about the character.

If you enjoy historical pieces, or always dreamed of living in the Old West then this is the show for you to check out.
