School Assignment: News Release

This is a press release assignment I did for my online public relations class through Thomson Rivers University:

First Eco Friendly Café Coming to Vancouver September 7th. The Owl Café is the first of its kind and exactly what Vancouver has been asking for. Vancouver, British Columbia

This fall Vancouver’s first ecofriendly, green café is opening at 4756 Vancouver Street. The Owl Café is the first of its kind here in BC. Everything at the café is locally sourced, including Vancouver’s favorite JJ Bean Coffee. The opening day is September 7, 2019, and the café hours run 8am to 8pm seven days a week. When you visit don’t forget to bring your own reusable cup so you can receive a discount.

The Owl Café is decorated with your Instagram aesthetic in mind. You can see photos of the café on their social handles, @TheOwlCafe, or their website TheOwlCafe.com. This gorgeous place also includes a wall dedicated to merchandise customers can buy. The Owl Café merchandise includes reusable tumblers, metal straws, and beeswax wraps. They hope that this will encourage Vancouverites to make being green and waste free not just a trend, but a way of life.

“The Owl Café is exactly what Vancouver has been asking for. People will love our new café because it’s finally a place that is environmentally friendly,” says Samantha Twist, owner of The Owl Café. And she is right; this café could not come at a better time. Society is demanding more, like the decrease of plastic straws and plastic wrap. While some companies are making minor adjustments, The Owl is eliminating all unnecessary packaging and waste in their café, everything is environmentally friendly and biodegradable.

The Owl Café is the dream of the owner Samantha Twist, who stirred up the idea for this concept after being introduced to beeswax wrap and other high functioning environmentally biodegradable options. After seeing how easy it is to make the switch, once you have the right materials in place, Twist wanted to inspire others to do the same. The new store aims to be zero waste, which means, amongst other things, getting rid of all plastic items such as straws, cups, wraps, and containers. Being environmentally friendly also means buying local, reducing food waste, having strict recycling and composting policies in place, and increasing energy efficiency. The hope is The Owl Café will set the new standard, encouraging other restaurants and cafés to follow their lead.
